Today, we are pleased to announce that EMS World has awarded the emsCharts SyncPen product with the 2010 EMS World Innovation Award for emergency medical patient documentation. The emsCharts SyncPen combines a real ink pen with smart pen technology, which allows handwritten forms to be transcribed directly into an electronic patient record in emsCharts.com.

emsCharts partnered with Microtech Systems in the UK to develop and refine the SyncPen for the EMS industry. Grant Hook, CEO of Microtech Systems, was on hand at a ceremony in Austin, Texas late last year when the award was announced. Hook had the following to say about this honor for the emsCharts SyncPen: “We are thrilled to be recognized in the EMS community for our application of this technology in the emergency medical setting. We are providing a product that we believe will make the jobs of EMS providers easier, which in turn will improve overall patient care. To receive acknowledgement for this is a great feeling.”

More about the emsCharts SyncPen:

The SyncPen works in conjunction with the emsCharts browser-based patient care record and agency intranet. The digital pen, which looks and feels like a normal ballpoint pen, reads a small microdot pattern printed on the paper forms and stores handwritten data within the pen. The unique dot patterns on the paper are nearly invisible to the naked eye and indicate the exact position of the pen on the page. After filling out a paper form, the EMS responder taps a box on the paper form to trigger the data upload to emsCharts. The end result is an inked copy of the form to leave at the receiving facility, synced electronic data in emsCharts, and a PDF file of the original form that is attached to the patient record. The SyncPen can be used for patient documentation, signature forms, consent and refusal forms, and much more.
