Product Details

A non-rebreathing mask is designed to deliver high concentrations of oxygen to a patient that doesn’t otherwise need assistance breathing. It delivers more supplemental oxygen than a nasal cannula, and is a completely noninvasive form of oxygen administration.

Non-Rebreather Mask Benefits

This mask is designed to form a tight seal around the patient’s nose and mouth to maximize the amount of oxygen given, which is between sixty to ninety percent FiO2 (the fraction of inspired oxygen). The fraction of inspired oxygen is the percentage or concentration of oxygen that a patient inhales. This type of mask is used in emergency and critical care situations to prevent low blood oxygen levels, which can lead to hypoxia.

The non-rebreathing mask facilitates oxygen delivery to patients suffering from chronic airway limitation, smoke inhalation, carbon monoxide poisoning, or any patient who needs high-concentration oxygen therapy without intubation or mechanical ventilation. Exhaled air is directed through a one-way valve in the mask, which prevents the inhalation of room air and the re-inhalation of exhaled air.

Healthcare personnel must monitor the patient while using this mask (or any oxygen delivery device) to ensure that the flow of oxygen is not disturbed or blocked, which can lead to a low respiratory rate or suffocation. Caregivers should also monitor the amount of oxygen remaining in the tank so that the tank can be changed before the oxygen supply is depleted.

The non-rebreather oxygen mask features an elongated face mask that is molded out of soft transparent PVC plastic. The mask features smooth edges to reduce irritation where there is contact with skin, the tubing adapter swivels to facilitate use on either side of the patient, and the spandex-terylene adjustable strap ensures that the mask fits comfortably. A pliable nose clip helps to keep the mask in place, and the attached reservoir bag ensures that the oxygen flow rate remains constant during variable breathing patterns. The reservoir bag is constructed of soft vinyl, and the mask comes complete with seven feet of star-lumen oxygen supply tubing.

Non-rebreathing masks are not intended for home use, and should not be used in conjunction with oxygen delivery systems used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). They should only be used in emergency situations with the supervision of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) or other trained medical personnel. This mask is also available in pediatric and infant sizes. It is designed for single patient use only and should be disposed of after use.
