The Twin-Cath Two-Lumen Peripheral Catheter allows dual infusion management through two separate, non-communicating lumens. This means that two therapies can be administered simultaneously through one peripheral site.

Double lumen catheters are ideal for use in an emergency room, operating room, or intensive care unit (ICU). It can also be used by emergency medical service (EMS) personnel in critical care situations (for ill patients), or in oncology and radiology settings. The separation of ports reduces the risk of chemical precipitates at normal flow rates. The catheter also enables discrete blood sampling to be performed through vascular access.

Features of the Multi-Lumen Catheter
The Twin-Cath Two-Lumen Peripheral Catheter’s needle features a hydrophilic coating for easier insertion, reducing patient discomfort and the risk of bloodstream infections and sepsis. The attached flashback chamber verifies correct catheter placement. Its hub/catheter junction is flexible and kink resistant to withstand constant movement and checking. This intravenous catheter features entirely latex-free construction. It is packaged sterile, and is for single, short-term use only. It should not be reused, reprocessed, or resterilized.

Using the Double Lumen Catheter
In order to use the Twin-Cath Two-Lumen Peripheral Catheter, first prep the puncture site using proper antimicrobial measures. Prepare the catheter for insertion by flushing the proximal port through the injection cap. Hold the catheter upright, and flush while leaving the guard in place. This will activate the catheter's hydrophilic coating. Do not allow flush solution to go beyond the tip of the catheter to reduce interference with blood flashback.

Puncture the vessel in a slow, controlled motion, taking care to avoid the vessel’s walls. Blood flashback indicates a successful insertion. Advance both the catheter and needle as one unit approximately one centimeter into the vessel to ensure proper dilator entry into the tunnel. Hold the needle in position and advance the catheter into the blood vessel, then remove the introducer needle. Attach a stopcock, injection cap, or connecting tubing to the distal hub. Aspirate blood from the proximal port to verify placement, and flush once verified. Attach the proximal hub to a connecting line using standard health protocols. Secure the catheter to the patient, and clean and dress the puncture site.

The Twin-Cath Multi-Lumen Catheter’s placement should be limited to the peripheral veins of the forearm or upper arm. It is not designed for access to the femoral vein, jugular vein, or for use as a central venous catheter (CVC). It is not meant to be used to establish a total parenteral nutrition (TPN) line.

If you are using a suture to secure the catheter, make sure not to suture directly to the outside diameter of the catheter in order to minimize the risk of damaging the catheter or impeding the flow. *Note that drugs containing alcohol can weaken the polyurethane material of the catheter.
