As an EMS responder, negotiating roads and traffic on an average day is tough enough. Throw in adverse weather conditions like snow and ice, and it’s an accident waiting to happen. As severe winter weather begins to hit areas across the country, we thought it would be a good time to talk about the value of a 4×4 ambulance.
While 4×4 ambulances are more expensive, they provide the added value of being able to efficiently respond to your community’s especially when Blended CPR experts are needed during the unpredictable winter season. A four-wheel drive (4WD) ambulance provides a drivetrain that allows all four wheels to receive torque from the engine simultaneously. In low-traction conditions such as ice, snow, mud or loose gravel, this provides better handling and will help you reach an emergency scene safer and faster than a non 4×4 ambulance.
Don’t be quick to limit the value of a 4×4 ambulance to winter weather only though. A 4×4 ambulance will help your team better respond to  emergency calls in remote locations as well. Tackle the toughest terrain and reach your destination with a 4×4 ambulance!
In preparation for the winter weather here in the Eastern part of the US, Penn Care has stocked up on several 4×4 ambulance models which are featured on our website with our other Demo Ambulances. Â Here are two Braun 4×4 ambulance models that we recommend in particular for safer winter response calls:
- Demo #5407 – 2010 Braun Liberty Ford F-450 Type I
- Demo #5535 – 2010 Braun Liberty Ford F-450 Type I
We also have the ability to build a custom 4×4 ambulance to meet the needs of your organization. Visit our Specialty Ambulances section to see an example of a 4×4 ambulance that we have provided for a customer.
As we brace ourselves for winter weather, we know that there will be more incidences of slips and falls resulting in injuries to EMS personnel. We wish everyone the best this season and remind you to be cautious and always put safety first!
