Product Details

The MedSource IV administration extension sets give flexibility to healthcare workers so that they may provide better patient care during IV therapy. If an intravenous line is too short, it can restrict the patient’s movement and increase the possibility of accidentally tearing out the IV. Using the IV tubing extension set, caregivers can facilitate extra length onto a normal IV administration set so that the patient has more freedom to use their arms. This extra ability to move allows them to feed themselves and other essential self-care tasks. Pediatric patients benefit from extension tubing because the freedom of movement can help reduce the child’s anxiety while receiving IV treatment.

IV therapy administers fluids lost through sweating or vomiting, blood transfusions, medication, or nutrition. It is one of the most common and safest medical procedures performed. However, there can be issues if the IV treatment has not been administered properly. Common complications from IV treatment can include:

Phlebitis
Phlebitis is inflammation of the vein. If the cannula is too large for the vein, the vein can become irritated and swollen. The caregiver should always use the smallest needle possible when starting an IV line.

Extravasation
This occurs when the IV solution leaks into the surrounding tissue. It can be caused by a cannula that is too large.

Infection
This can occur if the injection site, port, or IV line are not cleaned properly before insertion. Practicing good hygiene and sterilization procedures can decrease the risk of infection.

This IV tubing extension set is equipped with a needleless PRN connector, minimizing the chance of accidental needlesticks. A PRN connector allows for regulation, dispensing medication as needed. The tubing itself has a Roberts clamp for reducing the amount of slack on the IV line when necessary. IV extension tubes can be used in a wide variety of clinical settings, from chemotherapy infusion sites to intensive care units, as well as emergency medical service (EMS) situations out in the field. This tubing’s approximate priming volume is 2.0 mL.

Each IV extension set is packaged sterile. It is meant for single use only and should not be sterilized for reuse. The plastic construction is entirely latex-free and DEHP-free. The materials are non-pyrogenic and manufactured using medical-grade PVC. They are available as a single unit or in a case of 100 units.

Other medical supplies to complement the IV tubing extension set are: thermometers for monitoring a patient’s temperature, IV catheters for venous access, and adhesive bandages for wound care.
